Vamizi Island Lodge
Mozambique right now is hot, hot, hot. And nowhere more than the Quirimbas Archipelago in the country’s northern reaches. This is where you’ll find newly opened Vamizi, a 12km-long, thickly forested crescent edged in white sand and pristine coral reefs. The private island, which has its own P.A.D.I.-accredited dive centre, has been named one of the world’s top dive sites. The sea teems with life, from marlin to wahoo. Vamizi’s cuisine focuses on this larder. You can go game fishing, sea kayaking or take a relaxed cruise aboard an Indian Ocean dhow. Or simply kick off your flip-flops and hole up on honeymoon. There are only 12 beach houses, each with a large living room and veranda, interiors in the style of a Zanzibar palace and looking towards the sea.
Rooms: 12 beach houses
Facilities: PADI Dive centre, game fishing, sea kayaking
Know your seasons for Vamizi. From May until October, you’ll see large schools of dolphins. From July until November, you’ll see humpback whales. Between July and April endangered Hawksbill and Green turtles nest on the island’s beaches.
