India & The Indian Ocean
Location: Hyderabad, India
If you feel like retracing the steps of Nizams in majestic style, the Taj Falaknuma Palace is the sensorial treat for you. Set 2000 feet above Hyderabad, this palace in the sky proudly revels in its splendid historical and geographical setting.
The resort is laid out in a striking scorpion shape and is considered to be the pinnacle of luxury with its exceptional decor. There is actually a Palace Historian who can take you on a personalised guided tour that includes the three historical suites with the Main Palace at the head, the guest rooms in the belly and the Dining Rooms and Gol Bungalow in the scorpion’s tail. There are shades of the Empire running throughout with lush fabrics, antique furniture and impressively adorned high ceilings – there is a real touch of glamour in every suite.
Spending time in the Palace Library isn’t an obvious pastime on holiday but this is no ordinary library. Modelled on Windsor Castle’s, the shelves groan with the weight of some of the rarest manuscripts from around the world and the whole enlightening experience is worth the detour for any self-respecting book lover.
Lighter forms of entertainment include Jiva Spa and Yoga room, evening Qawwali at the Gol Bungalow the Jade Room known for its themed High Teas and various restaurants that specialise in great local and world cuisine. To end the day, we particularly love the relaxed atmosphere poolside at the Rotunda where you can pull up a sun lounger, sip cocktails and watch the world go by.
